Showtime Announces Trump Animated Series, Executive Produced by Stephen Colbert

Comedy Central and Anthony Atamanuik’s version of Donald Trump soon won’t be the only depiction of the president on TV, as it was announced today that Showtime will be premiering a new Trump-centered animated series starting this fall. The as-yet-unnamed show will be executive produced by The Late Show’s Stephen Colbert, along with his Late Show EP Chris Licht.

The impetus for the show comes from the opening segment of Colbert’s Showtime special, Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Night: Democracy’s Series Finale: Who’s Going to Clean Up This Sh*t?, as well as a recurring animated Trump segment on The Late Show. The show will depict day-to-day life in the White House, not just for the President, but for his family, colleagues and anyone else that he happens to encounter during his trips down the famed building’s halls. The production team hopes to have a quick turn around for each episode, allowing them to tackle current events as they happen.

“I know a lot of people wanted to do this, and I’m honored that the Cartoon President invited our documentary crew into his private world,” said Colbert of the announcement. “I’ve seen some of the footage, and I look forward to sharing the man behind the MAGA.”

Showtime described the show as such: “The fresh, cutting-edge comedy will present the true-ish adventures of Trump’s confidants and bon vivants – family, top associates, heads of government, golf pros and anyone else straying into his orbit – intrepidly exploring their histories and their psyches, revealing insights into what makes them so definitively Trumpian. It’s a workplace comedy where the office happens to be oval; it’s a character study in search of character, as seen through the eyes of an imaginary documentary crew.”
