Renegade Film Critic Paul O Counts Down his 2011 Ten. Or Eleven.

Paul O’s career began in 1980 as a walk on in the film Caddyshack.  He went on to write, produce and star in the horror cult film, GAP while simultaneously working as a film critic for several radio programs and print publications. Once again, Paul– who has an uncanny ability to predict the Oscars– brings us his top ten list of the years best films.

10.  Beginners. When so many films are derivative and insincere, here is an honest unpretencious and unique point of view. It is uplifting and depressing in a good way.

09.  Shame. Stylish and demanding, this is hardly everyone’s cup of tea but it’s shameless in it’s approach.

08.  Melencholia. Lars Von Trier may be a prick or an asshole but he is also an intellectual with a strong voice. He may possibly be crazy but he also may probably be a genius.

07.  Drive. An elegant, minimialistic reimagining of a classic action film. Every shot is a joy and a revelation and I probably didn’t enjoy anything this year as much as Albert Brooks performance.

06.  The Guard. This dark comedyhas been forgotten but it comes from one of the McDonagh brothers who are writing and directing some of the sharpest genre films since Tarentino came along.

05. Hugo/The Artist. Two heartfelt entertainments that show tremendous love for the history of film Let’s completely ignore that one of their directors is Marin Scorsese.

04.  Moneyball. Who thought that one of the smartest films of the year would be about baseball. It certainbly helps if it’s written by Aaron Sorkin but truthfully lots of big names had fingers in this pie. The passion of Brad Pitt kept the cooks in line.

03.  Tree of Life. Both mystifying and magnificent. There is plenty of room in the frames of this probinbg film for any opinion and all of them would probably be right.

02.  A Dangerous Method. Of the many biographical films this year this is the most rewarding and the most welcome.. I want to spend more time with Freud and Jung.

01.  The Descendents. The most well rounded tightly concieved and perfectly executed film of the year. Every facet of this diamond seems perfect.
