Pop Song Lyric Intelligence Is Dropping Down To Near 2nd Grade Level
Andrew Powell-Morse from SeatSmart.com did some analyses of popular music to figure out what grade reading level musicians are writing for. Over the last 10 years, the lyrics used in the most popular songs on the billboard charts have dropped to near 2nd grade reading level. Country artists are slightly ahead of hip hop artists and hip hop is a little smarter than pop, and artists like Pink, Maroon 5, and Robin Thicke are showing up at the lowest end of the report. This should remind us all to take “Bitch Better Have My Money” off that 3rd grader reading list. Third graders are above that. They’ve ready for something more challenging like 2005’s “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams”.
There’s a ton of data here and it makes a fascinating read. Oh sorry you were raised on Ke$ha? Maybe someone can sing about it for you.
