Policy Resulting From Teacher’s Snake Phobia Causes Controversy
An elementary school teacher in Oregon sent the usual packet of info for parents home before the first day of school, but one page stuck out: due to her extreme phobia of snakes, children in her class are not allowed to wear shirts with snakes on them or check out books about them from the library when she’s within sight. Students are prescreened to find out if they have a snake as a pet, in which case they’re put in another class (since they won’t be learning about them that year). The school defends her policy saying that the phobia is a condition, and is treated the same way they would with an allergy.
