Turns out Peter Jackson is a giant jerk. When casting the Lord Of The Rings, he allegedly denied David Bowie the part of Elrond after he auditioned for it, claiming Bowie was too famous to perform the role. Because Agent Smith was a nobody loser who only was the co-star of the Matrix, he was able to secure the role. Great work, Peter.
