Opie on Losing SiriusXM Gig: “Fired, So Fired.”

After a bunch of tweets first acting like he didn’t know what was happening and then being cagey, Gregg “Opie” Hughes of “Opie and Anthony” fame finally acknowledged via Instagram that he was fired from his gig at SiriusXM. Prior to being let go, Opie hosted the Opie Radio show weekdays from 3pm to 6pm.

“Fired, so fired,” he wrote early this morning, adding “love you guys. This will be a temporary setback.” And as a nod to his longtime fans, he included a video from the beach where he wrote a message in the sand. “Your Mom’s Box” were the famous last words said on the Opie and Anthony show by show character “Psycho Mark” after being fired from WNEW over the infamous Sex for Sam contest.

He later posted a photo of his face covered in stickers from what was supposed to be a vacation at the beach.

Hughes was let go from the company just days ago after the July 4 holiday (exactly three years after former co-host Anthony Cumia was fired by SiriusXM. SiriusXM released a short statement that they terminated their relationship with Hughes (read more here) but declined to give further information. Although neither SiriusXM nor Opie specified the reason for the firing, Opie’s dismissal came presumably as a result of a prank video he took of his former guest booker, in the bathroom and without the booker’s permission. Just prior to the July 4th weekend, Opie talked about the incident on his show.
