Open Mike Eagle Talks About Art Rock Influence

Open Mike Eagle is one of the most interesting guys in Rap. His music is different and cool, he himself is a cool guy who is also able to be funny while staying deep. In this interview he did with Vox.com he opens up about one of his biggest influences, the Art Rock group “They Might Be Giants”, a band originally formed in Lincoln, MA who linked back up when they moved to Brooklyn in the early 80’s. Mike grew up in the 80’s and 90’s which is very clear in his music and allows him to connect with his audience of the same age because of the absolute love everyone has for music who comes from that era.
Eagle brings up the high energy and fun sound of their music that hides the dark lyrics lying underneath. He specifically cites their song “Where Your Eyes Don’t Go”. Mike talks about the punchline culture of rap he came up in and how he employs that in his music, even when talking about things such as addiction and racism.
In the video clip, Open Mike Eagle takes you through a few of his own tracks off his new album “Hella Personal Film Festival”, including “Dive Bar Support Group” which is about the people who don’t want to go home at the end of the night and all just end up at the same dive bar.
Open Mike Eagle’s album Hella Personal Film Festival is available for download, and more information can be found on his website mikeeagle.net.
