“Olympus Has Fallen” Has Racked Up $2M In FCC Fines

The advert for the 2013 film “Olympus Has Fallen” opened with the familiar EAS Alert sound before it. Whoever thought of that was pretty creative, but unfortunately not smart enough to ask themselves “Hey, why don’t the other disaster movies ever use it?” Because it’s illegal to broadcast it outside of an actual emergency, hence the name EMERGENCY ALERT System. But don’t worry: that won’t cost producer Avi Lerner a dime: it’ll be the stations and cable networks that aired it, apparently sight unseen (and heard). So Viacom got jacked up by the FCC to the tune of $1.2M, NBC Universal for $530k, and ESPN just lost an appeal for a $280k fine.
