Netflix Takes On Exorcism Comedy

Netflix and British channel E4’s house studio Urban Myth Films are collaborating on a dark comedy about best friends/exorcists called “Crazy Face”. The six-part comedy will air on Netflix after its British premiere. Other than the content giant, E4 will be the only platform the show is aired on. In the past, E4 has served as home to “Skins”, “The Inbetweeners” and “Misfits”.

“Crazy Face” could share the tone and intrigue of Netflix’s “Dark Mirror”, like the spiritual, sillier younger sibling to the popular show. Besides British comedy’s illustrious success at home and abroad, the show introduces viewers to a host of new faces. “Downtown Abbey’s” Cara Theobold and E4 veteran Susan Wokoma (“Chewing Gum”) star as a naïve bowling alley attendant and a Wikipedia-savvy, anti-social ghost hunter, respectively. Amy (Theobold) and Raquel (Wokoma) fight spirits clinging to their unfinished worldly business with the help of Raquel’s best friend Suzanne (Riann Steele, “In the Flesh”) and voice of reason older brother Tyler (Arinze Kene, “Youngers”), coworker and love interest Jake (Lewis Reeves, “Unforgotten”) while facing off with the malicious Callum (Tony Curran, “Sons of Anarchy”).

The show isn’t alone in the theme of exorcisms; Fox is preparing a reboot of “The Exorcist”, A&E is finishing up season one of a follow up on the “The Omen” and Cinemax will premiere “Outcast” a drama based on a comic book by “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman. However, all of these shows are action thrillers or dramas. Comedy is a unique tool to take to the genre, especially utilizing British dark humor.

“Crazy Face” expands Netflix’s previous deal with E4 for the adaptation of a YA novel into a show called “Kiss Me First”. Howard Overman executive produces, coming from an impressive background in drama with his BAFTA-winning drama “Misfits”, a show currently being adapted by Freeform for US production. While E4’s been successful domestically and internationally, it’s awesome to watch Netflix expand its business model of backing creators. Netflix has promised $5 billion towards original content, so this obviously isn’t the last niche, intriguing premise we’ll hear about.
