Netflix Renews Chelsea, Bamford

Netflix’s “Lady Dynamite” and “Chelsea” represent comedic poles, but both will be returning to the streamer for second seasons. “Chelsea” previously released three episodes per week, while the first season of “Lady Dynamite” contained twelve episodes. It is currently unclear whether either show will depart from their prior episode count.

Both shows are logical extensions of the stand-up comedy of the women they focus on. “Lady Dynamite” is an astute and whimsical semi-autobiographical take on comedian Maria Bamford’s life featuring many themes she discusses while “Chelsea” is as brash and acerbic as Chelsea Handler’s stand-up and former shows. The two are completely unalike with one being a single-camera comedy deftly taking on themes of mental health and self-worth and the other, a multi-camera talk show dismantling current events. Ideally the success of these two dissimilar, (middle-aged) female-helmed shows will inspire more content from the behemoth streaming platform starring alternative female comedians.
