National Lampoon to Release First Original Album in 35 Years

National Lampoon is a name that evokes greatness in the world of comedy. The comedy company was a multi-media juggernaut, producing a popular magazine, a radio show, a hit off-Broadway play, and numerous blockbuster films like Animal House and the Vacation series starring Chevy Chase. While the company has existed in some form since 1970, many would argue that it reached its creative peak by the late 80’s.
The brand has taken some steps in the right direction in recent years, however, and now Lampoon veteran Tony Hendra is helping to restore the company’s name even further. On September 9th, National Lampoon plans to release its first original comedy album in 35 years, titled Are There Any Triggers Here Tonight? As you may have guessed from the title, the album takes aim at the current culture of political correctness and language policing taking place among younger audiences, and examines what impact those sensitivities have on the world of comedy. While a bit politically-leaning, the album’s main goal, Hendra insists, is to be straight-up hilarious.
“In the midst of mindless, shrill conversations about comedy, culture and other C-words, we’re just trying to be ferociously disrespectful and funny as hell” says Hendra.
Tony Hendra is the first editor that National Lampoon’s founders — Doug Kenney, Robert Hoffman and Henry Beard — ever hired for the magazine, and he’s had significant influence on the company’s creative offerings since. He co-wrote and co-produced Lemmings, National Lampoon’s off-Broadway show, and is currently helping to produce a scripted series based on the magazine’s early days. The writer and actor also played band manager Ian Faith in cult hit This is Spinal Tap, and wrote multiple seasons of popular British satire show Spitting Image.
Hendra is a brilliant and clever satirist, so the name of reputation if National Lampoon couldn’t be in better hands. Keep an eye out for the release of Are There Any Triggers Here Tonight? on Friday, September 9th. You can check out a biting excerpt from the album below:
