Martin Lawrence Announces First Special in 14 Years

Once one of the biggest stand-up acts in the country, Martin Lawrence has been relatively quiet on the comedy scene in recent years. He’s continued to perform, yes, but the comedian and actor hasn’t produced a special in 14 years. That’s about to change, however, as the comic has just announced that he has teamed up with Showtime to produce his first stand-up special since 2002’s Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat.
The new special, titled Martin Lawrence Doin’ Time: Uncut was filmed at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, and covers topics like sex and relationships, President Obama, Bill Cosby, and Hollywood.
Lawrence is more recently known for the slew of popular films that he’s starred in, such as the Bad Boys and Big Momma’s House franchises, but he is perhaps best known for his meteoric rise to fame as a stand-up in the early to mid 90’s. Martin hosted the perennial Def Comedy Jam and put out three stand-up specials between 1993 and 1995: Martin Lawrence Live Talkin’ Shit, You So Crazy, and Funk It. He made his movie debut in the cult classic Spike Lee film Do the Right Thing and had a popular TV show on Fox called Martin that aired for five seasons.
“I look forward to having my third concert film premiere on SHOWTIME,” said Lawrence. “Fourteen years is a long time between concert specials and I am excited to know that my TV audience will be able to enjoy this show as if they came to see me live.”
One person sure to be watching is Tracy Morgan who has been outspoken in the past about his love for Lawrence, and his gratitude for Martin’s assistance in getting his first big break.
The special will debut Friday, September 9 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Yes, that’s 9/9 at 9 so you won’t forget.
