Kevin Smith’s Mallrats Follow Up To Begin Filming

During a Friday morning appearance on the Preston & Steve radio show, director Kevin Smith announced that he will soon begin production on a long-awaited follow-up to his hit 1995 film Mallrats— and it’s going to be a 10-episode series.
Smith first teased the possibility of a sequel (called Mallbrats) — to be filmed at Philadelphia’s Exton Square Mall — last year, in a previous appearance on Preston & Steve. The plan was to begin filming in January of this year, but Smith had trouble acquiring the rights from Universal, who owns the Mallrats title.
“We submitted the script [to Universal] and my agent comes back to me and he goes, ‘Well, apparently Universal has never let a catalogue title go. Any title they own, they’ve retained,’” Smith told the radio hosts. “So we entered a protracted negotiation with Universal trying to get it made in different pockets of the studio.”
Smith finally got Universal to play ball, however, by proposing that they turn the film into a series.
“A couple months ago, we started reconfiguring the idea of doing Mallrats not as a film, but as a series, and Universal and I are just about to close our deal to do Mallrats the series,” Smith revealed. “Then, we take it out into the world and find a home for it. So, instead of doing a Mallrats movie, I’m going to do 10 episodes of a Mallrats series.”
It’s unclear if Smith will still be using the Mallbrats title or the same concept (Smith previously referred to the film as “Die Hard in a mall,”) but the fact remains that this long-desired sequel is finally, definitely happening. The bitter sweet part: Smith has put Clerks III on hold in order to shoot the Mallrats series, which is a pretty great problem to have if you’re a Kevin Smith fan.
Thanks to @CW_TheFlash, I've started setting up shop in scripted TV! First up: #BuckarooBanzai. Next up, #Mallrats! https://t.co/G4Nc4GqcXl
