HBO Drops More Info on Upcoming ‘Tracey Ullman’s Show’

A few weeks back, HBO announced the long-awaited return of network alumni Tracey Ullman. The comedian and master character-actor hasn’t put out anything for HBO since 2005, but that’s about to change; Her new show, Tracey Ullman’s Show, is set to debut on October 28th, and promises to deliver Ullman at her best. If the trailer is any indication, it looks like they’ve pulled that off:

In the new series, Ullman will play various characters throughout a series of short sketches in each episode. Those characters range from Dame Judi Dench, Dame Maggie Smith and German chancellor Angela Merkel to an ex-dictator’s wife, a fashion model’s agent and a finicky American tourist. Makeup and prosthetic technology is better than ever before, so Ullman will likely be able to pull off some of her best characters yet.

The show’s first episode brings the funny right from the start. In it, she’ll be playing Angela Merkel, a clumsy massage therapist, a job applicant with some skeletons in her closet, and a hilarious turn as beloved British actress Dame Judi Dench on a petty crime spree. This one should not be missed!

Ullman is no stranger to HBO: She starred in the popular Tracey Takes On… from 1996 to 1999, winning six Emmy Awards in the process. She recorded multiple specials with the network, including Tracey Takes on New York, Tracey Ullman: Live and Exposed, and Tracey Ullman in the Trailer Tales. Her return to the network has been a long time coming.

Ullman is a brilliant writer, producer and actress. She has proven time and time again that she is a master of sketch comedy, able to craft truly hilarious sketches and fall into and capture whatever character she takes on. In a world that takes itself so seriously, the levity of Ullman’s comedy is like a breath of fresh air.

Tracey Ullman’s Show premieres on Friday, October 28th at 11 p.m. ET/PT on HBO, with the first season consisting of six episodes.
