This insane theory floating around the internet says that Sandy actually dies when she drowns on the beach which is later referenced in “Summer Lovin'”. Danny is just the nice guy who tried to save her and the entire movie is her dreaming about what their life could have been if they were together. That is why the movie has more and more elements of fantasy as it goes on and ends with Danny and Sandy flying off in the car together. Unfortunately, this theory is most likely not true and the fact remains that it is just one of the worst movie endings of all time.
