Fallon to Host Golden Globes in 2017

NBC has chosen its own late night host Jimmy Fallon to host the 2017 Golden Globe Awards in January. The pick is logical, if unexciting, considering the Globe’s tradition of repeat hosts (Gervais and the duo of Poehler and Fey both hosted the show three times,) and Fallon’s past awards work, hosting NBC’s 2010 Emmys.
Unanimously positive sentiments were all around as NBC’s Entertainment chairmen Bob Greenblatt cited Fallon’s playful spontaneity as a deciding factor while simultaneously hyping up the Globes as the “most… uninhibited award show on television”. Dick Clark Productions CEO Allen Shapiro and Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Lorenzo Soria also chimed in about Fallon being a “dynamic entertainer” (Soria) that will “continue the tradition of cutting-edge excitement viewers have come to expect from the host of the Golden Globes” (Shapiro).
The statements are hyperbolic considering the infamous redundancy the format continually attempts to shake off. Networks traditionally tap one of their own to represent their award shows, with ABC and CBS doing the same. Change comes slow to awards shows, so choosing a host with an established show that hasn’t hosted an awards show since 2010 might just be considered cutting edge.
