Giuliani Gets The “Birdman” Treatment On Saturday Night Live
Just a week ago, “Birdman” won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Now it picked up another honor, being parodied in the cold open of Saturday Night Live. In the SNL sketch, it’s former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani played by Taran Killam who’s asking “How did we get here?”
Killam’s Giuliani is lamenting how far he’s fallen from being the hero of 9-11 to becoming a media pundit and puppet desperate for any possible air time. Actually Taran Killam’s impression is two impressions in one. He’s playing Michael Keaton as Rudy Giuliani, nailing Keaton’s expressions from “Birdman” during a tracking shot through the SNL hallways. Host Dakota Johnson was also part of the cold open, looking just like Emma Stone in her Oscar nominated “Birdman” role.
Rudy gets visited by his former self with Beck Bennett as the 2001 mayor, but with “Birdman” wings and a mask. Together they grab a brief moment of their former glory.
