Football Player Punches Woman, Grand Jury Insists He Returns To Team

bethel-battleLast month, incoming cornerback Nigel Bethel was released by Texas Tech after an altercation with female basketballer Amber Battle. Bethel punched Battle during a pickup basketball game, breaking a bone in her face. Well, a Lubbock grand jury has dismissed the charges, despite video of the incident. As a matter of fact, the grand jury used the video as evidence that Battle instigated the contact, because she shoved Bethel first (you know, because a woman shoving a D-I corner is fair reason for him caving her face in). And in a move that’ll only surprise those who don’t follow college sports, the grand jury then wrote a letter to Texas Tech’s AD insisting he be reinstated:

“We desire to see Mr. Bethel’s scholarship re-instated. If he is re-instated, it is our belief that his consequences should not be greater than those of Ms. Battle. If he is not re-instated, a public exoneration of his character on the part of Texas Tech University should be forthcoming, since Mr. Bethel’s future opportunities for an education as well as an athletic career have been jeopardized.”

And not only has Bethel returned to the team with only a three-game suspension, Texas Tech has suspended Amber Battle for an entire month of the basketball season.
