Five Best Bars to Get Drunk and Write With Your Comedy Partner in New York

skinny bitch 5 bars

Katie Hartman and Leah Rudick are the sketch comedy duo Skinny Bitch Jesus Meeting. They have spent years drinking and writing in various spaces in New York City. Check out their 3-night run at the PIT Loft September 24th, 25th and 26th.

Tuffet. East Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  Tuffet is just as lovely and adorable as it sounds and is the perfect place to get violently drunk on cutie seasonal sangrias while writing funny shit on a Sunday afternoon. With a bar in the front and a smaller more private room in the back (and free wifi!), you can tailor your sitting space to match the amount of belligerent (artistic) screaming you’ll be doing. For the outdoorsy type they have a large grape-vine curtained back patio equipped with a fireplace, perfect for keeping warm and burning your first nine jokes, which will all be terrible. Then that tenth one is great! Cause you’re drunk! Celebrate with a plate of cheese and charcuterie! Vomit it up in the fire pit! Get kicked out. Your work is done.  Tuffet – 286 Graham Ave. (East Williamsburg).

Klimat.  East Village, Manhattan. In the wintertime settle into one of the plush couches in this Eastern European wine bar to brainstorm all those genius web series ideas and rage over the fact that late night comedy is still fully dominated by white men. Comfort those chilly thoughts with a glass of hot spiced wine. It’s really hot, in fact. Like, really, really, really too hot. It makes you mad how hot it is. Why is it so hot? Plus, you can’t even touch the drink for fifteen minutes because it’s in a regular wine glass and you will BURN YOUR HANDS AND MOUTH AND THROAT! Use that quarter hour wisely to come to the conclusion that a web series is a waste of time unless you can get Zach Braff to run your kickstarter. Then, become so despondent with the state of the world that you gulp that hot wine down in an instant because it feels like the easiest thing you will do all year.  Klimat Lounge – 77 E. 7th St, New York, NY.

The Zombie Hut, Gowanus Brooklyn. For inspiration on the absurd/silly side, this kitschy tiki bar is top-notch. With fun, fruity cocktails ranging from $6-10 those ideas will flow quickly and furiously just like lava over the people of Pompeii. Bring a pen and notebook though because after that $26 flaming Scorpion Bowl you will be so blasted that you’ll destroy every electronic device in sight. Ever accidentally wipe with and iPad? Yikes! The Zombie Hut – 273 Smith Street (Gowanus, Brooklyn).

Olive Garden, Flatiron District, Manhattan. The Olive Garden on West 22nd street always has a wait, but head straight to the bar for a glass of Porta Vita Bianca (or Rosso), the best $6.50 you’ll spend all hour. Because after an hour you’ll want to get the fuck out of there. Dining at the Olive Garden is a great impetus for spitting out that first draft in a hurry while also playing the game Drink Every Time You Hear The Words “Italiano Sampler.” The minestrone is a steal at $7.49 and everybody loves sharing a soup. You’ll laugh, you’ll collaborate and since you won’t be getting too full on your shared soup, you’ll feel the Porta Vita pronto (as they say in Italy!). It’s true that when you’re there you feel like family because everyone else is stuffing breadsticks in their purse, just like Grandma! The Olive Garden – 696 6th Avenue, Flatiron.

The Burlington Coat Factory. Union Square, Manhattan. For those on a budget, this is the most cost savvy option. Buy a handle of Old Grandad whiskey, slip into a discounted puffy coat which may or may not be made of dog fur and head over to the dressing rooms which may or may not be equipped with surveillance cameras. Not only will you come up with comedy gold, but you just may be filmed doing it!  Burlington Coat Factory – 4 Union Sq. St. Union Square

Katie and Leah perform regularly at The Peoples Improv Theatre in NYC and were recently named “one of the twenty-five funny people that should have their own TV show” by Complex Magazine.  The  first season of their highly acclaimed web series, Made to Order, has been featured in Marie Claire, IndieWire, and the NY Observer.

Katie and Leah will be performing their hit show Skinny Bitch Jesus Meeting at The PIT Loft 154 W. 29th St in Chelsea, in New York City on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night – each show with a different special guest opener! Thursday night, the fun starts at 7:30pm with John Early (get tickets here), on Friday don’t miss Carolyn Castiglia kicks things off at 7:30 (get tickets here) and on Saturday you can see Erik Bergstrom open for Katie and Leah beginning at 7pm (get tickets here).  All shows are $7 with advance purchase.
