The Filtered Excellence: September 15, 2016
Bob Geldof once asked us, “Where is the filtered excellence!?” It’s right here. Once a week we take a break from comedy to bring you this week’s picks of the best things to watch, the most interesting things to do, great things to try, the best picks to read, our favorite things to listen to and more.
WATCH THIS:
Eight Days A Week. Ron Howard – with full cooperation with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the widows of John Lennon and George Harrison, looks back at Beatlemania from the vantage point of The Fab Four’s years on the road. Supported by archival and behind the scenes footage – the most of which is being seen for the first time – Howard shows how four Liverpool musicians went from being the house bands in London and Germany clubs to becoming a global phenomenon. Interviews with McCartney and Starr (done exclusively for the film) details what life was like in the center of this musical hurricane and how the trappings of the studio ultimately became the group’s best refuge from all of the madness. But what the film really puts on display is what made it all happen in the first place: The music. The Beatles were first and foremost great musicians and composers, not to mention an incredible a live band. Whether they are dodging rabid fans, meeting heads of state or just goofing around during down time, It’s a roller-coaster of a rock movie fueled, of course, with a great soundtrack. As an added bonus, those who will see the doc in theaters will also get to see The Beatles legendary 1965 show at Shea Stadium in full, with digitally remastered sound and 4K restoration. Eight A Week: The Touring Years will be select theaters on September 16th before moving to Hulu on September 17th. You can go towww.thebeatleseightdaysaweek.com for more information.

Back To The Front: A Fully Authorized Visual History Of The Master Of Puppets Album & Tour by Matt Taylor. Released in 1986, Metallica’s third album marked a turning point: It was their first on a major label and expanded the band’s sound to incorporate more intricate and complex arrangements. In addition, the lyrics explored everything from alienation, oppression, powerlessness, abuse of power and all of its consequences. All of this connected with audiences as the album sold over 6 million copies in the U.S. alone, moving the band to headliner status. This new book – written with full cooperation with the band – looks back at this pivotal moment in the Metallica story with recollections from the band, family, friends and fans. The centerpiece is a ton of shots of Metallica in the studio and on the road. It also serves a moving tribute to bassist Cliff Burton, who was killed in a bus accident during the tour in support of the album. A must have for any Metallica fan. Back To The Front is available now through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and all major book retailers.

New York City: A Retrospective: Ralph Steadman. Whether it was providing the visuals for Hunter S. Thompson and on his own, Ralph Steadman’s drawings have always has always contained a bite and a wit that has never wavered for over 50 years. His complimentary work with Thompson is the centerpiece of a new retrospective presented by the Society Of Illustrators. It also features his earliest work for the London publication Private Eye and his 2011 First Amendment court challenge to a ban on a pale ale that featured a logo that he designed. Subversive, confrontational and to the point, this is the ultimate look at one of an illustration giant. A Retrospective: Ralph Steadman will be at The Society Of Illustrators throughOctober 22nd. New York City: Power To The People: The Black Panthers In Photographs. To coincide with The Panthers 50th Anniversary, The Steven Kasher Gallery is presenting this new exhibit featuring the political party at the height of its powers. It features rare photographers by Panthers photographer Stephen Shames and the illustrations of Emory Douglas, which were featured prominently in the Panthers’ newspaper and all promotional materials. Seeing these powerful images from the late 60s and early 70s reminds us just how potent the organization was then and now – especially since many of the issues they were fighting against – police brutality, racism, adequate housing and economic inequality, among them – are still being fought today. It’s a fantastic testament to one of the key players in the American Civil Rights Movement. Power To The People: The Black Panthers In Photographs will be at The Steven Kasher Gallery September 16th through October 29th. You can go tohttp://www.stevenkasher.com/ for more information.
New York City: The Master: Philip Seymour Hoffman. One of, if not, the best actors of his generation, Philip Seymour Hoffman didn’t just play a character, he became that character. The roles ranged from fragile and pathetic to authoritative and menacing with each performance staying with you long after the project was over. His sudden death at the age of 46 still have the film industry and fans reeling. The Museum Of The Moving Image will presenting a three week retrospective featuring some of his best work. Among the films that will be featured: Boogie Nights, Capote, The Master, Doubt, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Happiness, The Master, The Savages, Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead, 25th Hour, Magnolia, Synecdoche, NY, and his final starring role, A Most Wanted Man. In addition, Laura Linney, John Patrick Shanley, and Charlie Kaufman will be on hand to introduce select screenings and share insights on what it was like to work with Hoffman. Done with love as much appreciation, this retrospective is a much deserved victory lap for an all-time great.
