NBCUniversal announced today that they will continue to expand the programming for their comedy streaming service, Seeso, with the addition of their new show, Debate Wars. The show, which will be hosted by comedian Michael Ian Black (Wet Hot American Summer, Stella,) will center around teams of comedians and improvisers as they debate about inane topics, from babies versus old people to cake versus pie. The show will feature comics such as Gilbert Gottfried, Judah Friedlander, Janeane Garofalo, Eugene Mirman, Aparna Nancherla, Todd Barry and more.
Black has been keeping busy in recent years, starring in Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer, TVLand’s The Jim Gaffigan Show, and writing a series of children’s books, even one about our future emperor, Donald Trump.
“I look forward to moderating spirited debates on all manner of inconsequential subjects that are, nonetheless, of grave national importance,” said show host/director Michael Ian Black. “Hopefully our debaters will conduct themselves with exactly the same level of maturity as our presidential candidates,” he continued, surely without a hint of sarcasm.
The crew behind the show is littered with experience, so the final outcome is sure to be hilarious. The show will be run by Brian McCann, longtime writer for Conan O’Brien, and will be directed by fellow Conan alum Liz Plonka and Michael Ian Black. Dan Pasternack (Comedy Bang! Bang!) and Marc Turtletaub (Safety Not Guaranteed, Little Miss Sunshine) will be executive producing, with Aparna Nancherla acting as a supervising producer.
Better yet, the show will be filming its six-episode season in just a few weeks, from May 19th – 21st in New York.
