ESPN’s Summer Of Implosion: French Open Dropped

While the Roland Garros tournament did air on ESPN, the cable rights were actually owned by Tennis Channel and subleased to the Worldwide Leader. Now ESPN plans on ending that agreement, claiming the ratings their morning broadcast window got weren’t impressive enough. It’s widely believed NBC, the broadcast rights holder, will pick up the package for NBCSN. With F1, EPL soccer, and the Tour de France, the network has been successful at showing real damn sports in the morning.
The decision comes less than a month after ESPN’s penultimate British Open broadcast: that, too, will be moving to NBC (and The Golf Channel) in 2017.
