Deadline confirmed this weekend that the long-awaited biopic of comedy legend Richard Pryor would include Eddie Murphy, Kate Hudson and Oprah. It was just over a year ago that it was announced that Mike Epps had been cast as Richard Pryor, but now Deadline confirmed that Eddie Murphy will play Pryor’s father, Leroy “Uncle” Buck, Kate Hudson will play Pryor’s widow, Jennifer, and Oprah Winfrey will play Pryor’s brothel-owner grandmother.
Back in May, in an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Epps had revealed that Eddie would be playing Pryor’s father and Oprah would be playing Pryor’s grandmother, and that Kate Hudson was in the pic, but it appears that those roles weren’t confirmed until now. Epps has said it’s been a long time dream to take on this role, even back when Pryor was still alive. Back in December Epps told our own Jeffrey Gurian that any Black comic that wasn’t influenced by Richard was doing something wrong. They weren’t paying attention, cause Richard was the blueprint for this whole thing.
Pryor was raised in a brothel in Peoria, Illinois. He discusses this upbringing and his life in his autobiography, Pryor Convictions. There have been many versions of a Pryor biopic that have been rumored over the years, with everyone from Murphy to Marlon Wayans slated to play the iconic stand-up. Epps will take the role. Lee Daniels, who previously directed The Butler, will begin production on the film in March.
