The Dolphins Could Have Had Russell Wilson
Before coming to Arkansas, Bret Bielema was the head coach at Wisconsin. He was also interviewed by the Miami Dolphins for a head coaching position in 2012. An interview that ended when he made his choice for quarterback, per ESPN:
He promises them a Super Bowl ring within five years if they pick Wilson, his quarterback at Wisconsin, in the upcoming draft.
The idea of selecting a 5-10 quarterback in the second round, which is where Bielema thinks they need to, does not go over well. They think he’s crazy.
One hundred percent,” Bielema says.
They all looked at me like, ‘You can’t say that. That’s the difference between college and pro. He’s undersized. He can’t throw.’ I was like, ‘OK, all right,’ and I honestly, that day, kind of pulled myself out of it.”
The Dolphins continued to struggle under GM Jeff Ireland, whose staff chose 6’4″ Ryan Tannehill in that draft. Miami fired him after last season following series of losing campaigns, and public relation disasters like calling a fan an asshole and asking Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute. Proving the ability to fail up in the sport, he’s currently a scout with the New Orleans Saints. And if that’s not crazy enough, he actually worked as a draft consultant for Seattle last April (they fired him after one month).
