DL Hughley Takes On HBO After Bill Maher’s Use of the N-Word

If there’s anyone in the country who could draw the heat and fire aimed at Kathy Griffin this week away from her, of course it would be Bill Maher. Today, Bill Maher known for being unapologetic for his comedy, has issued a mea culpa saying he went too far by using the N-word on Friday night’s episode of HBO’s Real Time.  In the aftermath, one comedian isn’t taking this up with Bill Maher, he has a problem with Maher’s home network. D.L. Hughley is tweeting about what he now expects out of HBO after this controversy.

D.L. also tweeted out a link to video of Bill Maher’s joke using the N-word as the punchline. As did many others, including DeRay Mckesson from the Black Lives Matter campaign, who was one of a lot of tweeters asking HBO to fire Bill Maher. You can watch Bill Maher’s joke with Nebraska U.S. Senator Ben Sasse in this Real Time clip. We would normally say “NSFW Language”, but you know what’s coming in this video.

After a night to think about it, Bill Maher decided to make a very rare apology, which so far seems to be enough for D.L. Hughley. Maher said:
“Friday nights are always my worst night of sleep because I’m up reflecting on the things I should or shouldn’t have said on my live show. Last night was a particularly long night as I regret the word I used in the banter of a live moment. The word was offensive and I regret saying it and am very sorry.”

HBO put out a release to the Hollywood Reporter. It read, “Bill Maher’s comment last night was completely inexcusable and tasteless. We are removing his deeply offensive comment from any subsequent airings of the show.”

D.L. also weighed in with TMZ about the Kathy Griffin situation, saying “It’s ridiculous, the things we choose to be offended by is amazing to me.” He compared Kathy Griffin’s piece to a comment made by Ted Nugent.

While CNN canned Kathy Griffin from their New Year’s Eve show, HBO has made no mention of firing Bill Maher. But that doesn’t mean that D.L. Hughley isn’t waiting for their call.
