Diego Maradona quote tribute
In the quarter finals of the 1986 World Cup, not more than 4 years after the two countries went to war, Argentina played England in a match where Diego Maradona scored twice. On his first goal, the ball appeared to hit his hand, which of course would disallow the goal. This seemed evident to everyone but the referee; even Maradonas teammates were hesitant to congratulate him after the ball went in the net. The goal was allowed. Argentina went on to win the 1986 World Cup.
Maradona was known before and since to be without question the greatest soccer player to ever play. He was a complete attacking forward who possessed unique technical and physical abilities, but also was dedicated to team play, resulting in consistent, spectacular, brilliant strikes for both him and his teammates. As a result of such rare ability on display, Argentinians only speak of him with a respectful reverence, and it’s said that many consider him to be divine, even referring to him as God.
When Maradona was asked after the game if the ball in question had indeed illegally contacted his hand, Maradona replied with the same timely perfection he produced on the field: he simply stated that the goal was scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God.”
