Chris Distefano Sitcom with HIMYM Creators Heading to CBS After Bidding War
CBS has outbid ABC for a comedy from stand-up Chris Distefano and “How I Met Your Mother” creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas with Sony TV.
The untitled family comedy is a semi-autobiographical look at Chris’ life as a Brooklynite and new father married to a Puerto Rican woman. In a set on “Late Night with Seth Meyers”, Distefano discusses his mafia-connected family and his father’s friend’s nicknames, a blatantly “mafia thing”. There’s Tommy Pinesols, who’s called that because “he cleans things up” and Bobby Pets who always has illegal, exotic pets in his basement apartment. If the set is any indication of the tone of the upcoming show, the upcoming NYC-centered show will be like a shadier HIMYM with the social circle of adorable like-minded 30-year olds replaced by a network of dubious Italian-American aunts and uncles.
Bays, Thomas and Distefano will write the story, and Bays and Thomas will write the script, Deadline Reports.
It was just two years ago when we were congratulating Distefano on his Comedy Central Half Hour special, and then last year we watched Chris co-star on “Benders” at IFC. “Benders” didn’t last, the show was cancelled back in December after one season, but this should more than make up for any bad feelings. You can also add Chris to the list of comedians with great careers who got their TV start on MTV’s “Guy Code.”
