The Carmichael Show Picks Up a Third Season

Jerrod Carmichael’s The Carmichael Show is scrappy. Although it has received decent reviews and ratings for a Sunday night show, the sitcom’s future at NBC has been in limbo for a few days now. Just this morning, NBC Entertainment Chair Bob Greenblatt spoke to the press, stating that the network was still in negotiations with the show’s studio, 20th Century Fox TV, over the number of episodes that a third season would contain. “I was hoping we would have it by now. We’re just going back and forth with the studio about the number of episodes and just haven’t come to terms. Hopefully we’ll resolve it soon,” Greenblatt said to reporters earlier today.

As it turns out, that resolution has already been reached. According to Variety, the studio and network have agreed upon a 13-episode season, following in the footsteps of the previous season.

The show is one of only two comedies returning to NBC this year (the other being Superstore starring America Ferrera,) and the show has received much praise from critics, so it’s no wonder NBC was so willing to work with the studio to keep the show on the network.

The show stars Jerrod Carmichael (who also writes the series) as himself, showing his day-to-day interactions with his fiancée and old-school Southern family as he struggles to keep everyone happy and also deal with current-day issues like gun ownership, the Bill Cosby scandal, and the Black Lives Matter movement. Carmichael’s parents are played by David Alan Grier and Loretta Devine with Amber Stevens West as his fiancée, Rel Howery as his brother and Tiffany Haddish as his brother’s ex-wife.

The show airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on NBC, and is currently wrapping up its second season, which ends Sunday, May 29th.
