Big Bird Was Scheduled To Be On The Space Shuttle Challenger

There are always stories about celebrities like Seth MacFarlane and Mark Wahlberg who were scheduled to be on the hijacked flights on 9-11. The country also came close to losing its most famous Sesame Street character when the space shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986. According to the new documentary, “I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story”, the shuttle launch was originally suppose to have Big Bird on board. As part of a plan to get kids interested in the space shuttle program, NASA was going to have Spinney fly into space as Big Bird. The idea was scrapped because the costume was too big for the shuttle. That would have been a lot harder to explain to the kids than Mr. Hooper dying.
