Baz Luhrmann Bringing 1970s New York City Series To Netflix

In the 70s, New York City was near bankruptcy, violent and seemed like a lost cause. One thing that was in abundance during that the time in NYC was creativity. That’s the New York that is the basis of Baz Luhrmann’s “The Get Down”, his new drama coming to Netflix that focuses on the music that came from that era.
Luhrmann’s story is told through a group of young South Bronx artists and the emergence of the punk, hip hop and disco scenes that were born out of a city that looked destined to crumble. Baz Luhrmann who directed “Moulin Rouge”, “Romeo and Juliet” and “The Great Gatsby” brings his unique perspective to the project by working as executive producer on the series and who will direct the first 2 episodes of the 13 episode season as well as the season finale.
Luhrmann talked about bringing this project to Netflix. He said, “In this golden era of TV, the Netflix culture puts no constraint on creative possibilities. So it is a natural home for The Get Down, a project I have been contemplating and working on now for over 10 years. Throughout, I’ve been obsessed with the idea of how a city in its lowest moment, forgotten and half destroyed, could give birth to such creativity and originality in music, art and culture. I’m thrilled to be working with my partners at Sony and collaborating with a team of extraordinary writers and musicians, many of whom grew up with and lived the story we’ve set out to tell.”
“The Get Down” is due to premiere on Netflix in 2016.
