Amy Schumer Tells the Internet to Calm the F Down

Amy Schumer made a joke. Not just any joke, but a joke about Taylor Swift. Not just ANY jokes about Taylor Swift. Amy Schumer dared to mention the body part, of another woman.

As expected, the Swifty’s or whatever Taylor Swift die hard fans are called, responded with accusations of body shaming. Schumer seemed to be lightheartedly poking at her own gap as much as she was poking fun at how frequently Taylor’s “space between” seems to make it into the news when she captioned this photo: ‘Taylor that’s not a thigh gap. This is a thigh gap’’

Despite the Taylor backlash, Schumer handled the wanna be controversy in true comedian form. Donning a blonde wig and an obviously fake beard painted on her face, Amy followed up with this photo and the caption, ‘That’s not a beard this is a beard. So sorry to anyone with a beard this may offend’ #relax, she wrote.

One would think that because there was no gender dynamic, that Amy should be able to poke fun at another woman. Nope.

In the comedy genre, the standard rule of thumb is you “punch up”.  Sometimes that means you add humor to a script by punching it up, but it also means you take shots at people with more power than you have. You can’t make fun of people who are below you, that is unkind.

If you are Amy Schumer, who the hell else can you make fun of?

Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and…? Will Schumer’s rocket to the top of comedy in 2015, inhibit her ability to poke fun. Is it necessary for comedians to maintain low status as much as possible, in order for the psychology of comedy to play in their favor? Only time will tell. In the mean time, keep fighting stupidity with humor, kids.
