All systems go for Jim Carrey Comedy Series “I’m Dying Up Here”

In August of this year the palettes of comedians and comedy groupies alike went crazy with news of the Jim Carrey produced pilot for Showtime “I’m Dying up Here”. Yesterday Showtime announced it would pick up the hourlong comedy. Full on comedy drooling may commence.

Set in the celebrated and infamous L.A. stand-up comedy scene of the ’70s, when the careers of most comedy superstars began, “I’m Dying Up Here” will delve into the inspired and damaged psyches that inhabit the hilarious, but complex business of making an audience laugh.

Any comedian who has done the work has read books about stand up in the 70’s, what a groundbreaking time it was for comedy and the comedy club industry. The one hour format hints that this foray into the world of comedians will allow the time to explore the nuances of the genre of stand up.

Starring Melissa Leo as the club owner, this writer can only assume Leo will be channeling the spirit of Mitzy Shore, the most revered and feared of all the club owners. Clark Duke, Michael Angarano, Andrew Santino, RJ Cyler, Erik Griffin and Stephen Guarino are among the ensemble cast and Al Madrigal, Cathy Moriarity and Jon Daly will make guest star appearances.

With former stand up comedian Dave Flebotte (Will and Grace) as writer/producer, the show seems to have all the right people, in all the right places. Anyone in the industry knows how much that can make all the difference.

No premier date or episode count has been announced, but we will let you know as soon as we do.
