Adam Sandler Bringing a New Animated Franchise to Upstart Studio

The Wrap announced that Adam Sandler will write, star in, and produce in an untitled family animation through STX Entertainment through his Happy Madison Productions company. The company is a fledgling production house and gaining Happy Madison is a huge move.

Last time Sandler brought his brand of humor to family-friendly animations, the result was blockbuster “Hotel Transylvania”, a franchise which promised a third installment. This collaboration follows Sony declining to produce “Ridiculous 6” and Sandler’s team shopping the feature around to Netflix. Things get awkward as Sony is signed on for “Hotel Transylvania 3”. In other words, the transition to Netflix for a live-action film is less jarring than parting ways with Sony on creating another family animation together. Could Happy Madison have been lent to the smaller STX so Sony can avoid production costs and STX reaps the benefits of a large name?

It’s more than likely Sandler will bring his usual co-stars on board. This could include director Dennis Dugan, actor Kevin James or even Drew Barrymore. This next film could be both a fresh direction for Sandler’s career and a promising move, considering the success of “Hotel Transylvania”. Best case scenario, this project with a smaller-name company might link to a more genuine creative urge than the formulaic simplicity linking his less memorable projects.

Last time Sandler’s humor found a way to an adult audience as a live action comedy, viewers got “The Ridiculous 6” and all the stories of Native American cast members walking off set in disgust. He’s made a lot of movies with Happy Madison Productions and no single work is worth writing off a talent, just consider which avenue could be a better fit for the prodigious producer. It might be time for Sandler to gain a much younger audience.
