‘Adam Ruins Everything,’ ‘Greatest Ever’ Returning to truTV

It seems that truTV is fully committing to its move towards comedy with the news today that the network has renewed its hit comedy Adam Ruins Everything for a second season. The popular show, based off of a CollegeHumor web series of the same name, stars comedian Adam Conover as he mercilessly debunks a new topic each week.
The show has performed well in key demographics since its debut last year and has garnered a significant following through viral social media videos. While the show’s first season (which ends on December 27th) consists of 26 episodes, truTV has only given a 16-episode order for season two. It’s likely that a call for more episodes will occur partway through the season, as it did for season one.
Adam Ruins Everything owes its success to its simple formula and informative nature. Each episode, Conover focuses his skepticism on one particular topic — hygiene, for example — and then systematically breaks it down to its core components, exposing which of our commonly-held beliefs are based on myths or false advertising. Conover’s presentation is part humor and part educational, with the host gleefully basking in the dismay of the viewer as their world-view is shattered while waves of infographics and source references wash over the screen. The show does what it’s trying to do very well, and so renewing it was likely a no-brainer for the network.
On top of Adam Ruins Everything, truTV has also announced that they’re renewing the magic/illusion show The Carbonaro Effect, pop culture countdown Greatest Ever, and life advice show You Can Do Better. The network has also given the go-ahead for two new shows — Talk Show the Game Show with comedian Guy Branum (The Mindy Project, X-Play) and Chris Webber’s Full Court Pranks. The former is a game show/talk show mashup that has comedians judging celebrities and awarding points based on their performances, and the latter is a sports-themed prank show hosted by former five-time NBA all-star Chris Webber. Both shows are planned to debut in the spring of 2017.
