46th Annual Snowball Derby
The year-end All-Star event of short-track racing is being held this weekend in Pensacola, Florida. The Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway has been held every first weekend in December since 1968, often featuring some of the best short track racers from across the country. Previous winners include NASCAR stars like Darrell Waltrip, Pete Hamilton, Donnie Allison, and Kyle Busch, and short track legends like Butch Miller and Gary St. Amant.
Chase Elliot, son of two-time Cup champion Bill Elliot, became the youngest winner in 2011, and will be returning to the Derby after scoring his first Truck series win in Canada this summer. Eric Jones will also be defending last year’s win, driving for Kyle Busch as he did for his first Truck series win a month ago at Phoenix. And Nationwide regular Johanna Long will be back hoping to repeat her 2011 win, only the second female driver to do so (Tammy Jo Kirk, 1994). Other NASCAR regulars include two-time Cup race winner David Ragan, Cale Gale, and Landon Cassil. Several NASCAR family members will also be there, including Steven Wallace, John Hunter Nemechek, Ross Kenseth, and Ben Kennedy, the great-grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France. Augie Grill, former ASA winner Mike Garvey, and 16-year-old ARCA driver Kyle Benjamin.
Super Stock, Bombers, and other Late Model races lead up to the 300-lap Snowball Derby on Sunday. The race begins at 2pm ET, and both text and radio coverage can be found at speed51.com.
