Who is On Late Night Tonight in Comedy: Week of December 21, 2020

Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?

This week, everyone’s on their holiday break, Conan has funny reruns and Seth decides to have Thanksgiving on Christmas.

When it comes to our late night talk show hosts, they don’t exactly play Bob Cratchit to the networks’ Scrooge. Whereas Bob had to beg for an afternoon off on Christmas Day, most of the hosts won’t be working the rest of the year. The Jimmys and Stephen along with Seth Meyers, James Corden and Trevor Noah all have the entire Christmas week off.

Conan O’Brien won’t be working, but as a Christmas bonus, he’s loaded up his Best Of Conan shows with plenty of comedy guests. On Monday, Team Coco re-airs an episode of Conan featuring Andy Daly who is working on a new installment of a Christmas classic. He’s working on a another sequel to “Home Alone.” It’s being called a continuation of the story that began in 1990 with the original “Home Alone” which starred Macaulay Culkin. This latest chapter is from SNL scribes Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. And it will include an appearance by the original “Kevin McCallister” played by Macaulay Culkin.

Tuesday on Conan, TBS is replaying an episode with guest Al Franken. The comedian and former U.S. Senator had plenty to say in this very politically charged year. And here’s a programming note; on Thursday, Conan is pre-empted on the TBS network. Conan won’t be airing so that TBS can bring you its 24 hour holiday tradition with the comedy classic, “A Christmas Story.” The film that has the country saying “You’ll shoot your eye out” every holiday season begins at 8pm et on Thursday night, Christmas Eve, December 24th on TBS.

The week starts out with a great Late Night with Seth Meyers repeat on NBC. His virtual guest on this Best of Late Night will be one of the foremost comedy essayists in America today, David Sedaris. If you’re looking for a fun holiday read, David Sedaris’ book “The SantaLand Diaries” will give you some Christmas chuckles at the end of a year that was hardly a laughing matter.

On Wednesday, Late Night with Seth Meyers has a repeat with Cazzie David, the daughter of Larry David (so she’s naturally funny) and who has been called “the next Lena Dunham.” She has written for Vanity Fair and Vogue, plus Cazzie created the web series “86ed” which is like “Curb” except for younger people. Cazzie David appeared on Late Night to talk about her new book, “No One Asked For This” which is a collection of essays. Wednesday is the perfect night to catch up with this Late Night rerun and get introduced to one of comedy’s young, strong, new voices.

Thursday night, on a replay of the Late Late Show, James Corden welcomes Academy Award winner Goldie Hawn. The Oscar winner is appearing on the Late Late Show with her longtime partner and co-star Kurt Russell. They’ll be promoting their new Christmas movie, “The Christmas Chronicles: Part 2” where Kurt and Goldie play Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus. “The Christmas Chronicles: Part 2” is currently streaming on Netflix.

In a non-comedy programming note; on Thursday and Friday which is Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Stephen Colbert is replaying his two-part interview with former President Barack Obama. Of course, part one will be on Thursday on the Late Show and part two will re-air on Friday on CBS. The former POTUS will be promoting his new book, “A Promised Land” which is available everywhere now and makes a great Christmas gift. Hint. Hint.

Also on Friday, Seth Meyers is replaying his Late Night Thanksgiving show on Christmas Day night. As per his annual tradition, Seth’s Thanksgiving guests were his family including his parents and brother Josh Meyers. Meanwhile over at CBS, the Late Late Show rerun includes an appearance by Billy Eichner, which is a lot like having a loud, fast-talking, Christmas elf on your late night talk show.

Speaking of Christmas elves, this holiday weekend, Saturday Night Live has one of its favorite Christmas episodes that it will replay on SNL Encores this Saturday at 10pm et. It’s hosted by “Aquaman” star Jason Momoa with musical guest Mumford & Sons. It’s from December, 2018 and has plenty of Christmas sketches. One sketch in particular is sure to make any SNL Best of Christmas list.

The sketch is called “Elf on a Shelf” after the holiday classic, and it’s about Scrappy, an elf who has seen too much when the boy he was sent by Santa to keep an eye on, starts to go through significant changes and starts exploring his own body. This weekend’s SNL Encores starts at 10pm et on NBC also includes a parody sketch of Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” which features an extra ghost played by Jason Momoa who’s just so much “extra!”

Then the regular Saturday Night Live rerun on Saturday at 11:30pm et on NBC, is hosted by Adele with musical guest H.E.R. This is a repeat of Adele’s first time hosting Saturday Night Live even though she’s been a musical guest on SNL before. It’s not a Christmas episode, but it is the SNL Halloween show. So, if you don’t mind mixing your holidays, this is a show for you.

Have yourself a Merry Christmas!
