It’s Official; Apatow Bringing 2 Part Carlin Doc to HBO

HBO and Judd Apatow are teaming up to produce a two part documentary on the legendary George Carlin.
Considered the ‘dean of counterculture comedians’, the doc will cover his entire career, which included 14 HBO comedy specials, more than 130 appearances on The Tonight Show, and his influences on generations of comics. ‘George Carlin’s work becomes more relevant every day’, Apatow said in a statement. ‘It is an honor to be given the opportunity to tell the story of his life and work’. The doc will also include interviews with the comic’s family, friends, and archival footage.
Apatow will direct the film, and will bring together the same creative team behind the Emmy Award-winning The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling: Michael Bonfiglio, editor Joe Beshenkovsky, with Teddy Leifer and Jerry Hamza aboard as executive producers.
Carlin’s daughter Kelly, is thrilled to have Apatow attached to the project. ‘Having been the public keeper of my dad’s legacy these last 12 years, I’ve dreamt of the right people appearing at the right moment to give the documentary telling of my father’s story what it deserves – an honoring of his comedic genius and unique cultural impact, while not shying away from his personal struggles and humanity’, Carlin added. I’m thrilled that Jerry Hamaza and I have teamed up with Judd Apatow, Michael Bonfiglio and Teddy Leifer to make it happen now. May the comedy gods smile up at us as we endeavor to share my dad’s heart, mind and genius with the world’.
