Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: September 8, 2018

Tonight’s repeat episode of Saturday Night Live is hosted by “Kid Gorgeous” himself, John Mulaney!

The start of the new season of Saturday Night Live is just around the corner. The premiere of SNL – Season 44 happens Saturday, September 29th. No announcements have been made about who will be hosting in season 44 yet but until then, we’ll have to make due with three more repeats including tonight’s which was one of the most eccentric and extravagant episodes from SNL – Season 43.

John Mulaney was promoting his then-new Netflix comedy special, “John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City” when he hosted Saturday Night Live on April 14, 2018. In fact, he used some of the material in his new special in his SNL monologue. Mulaney was a first-time host, but he was no stranger to Saturday Night Live. He was a writer for the NBC comedy variety series beginning with SNL – Season 34 in 2008, and he even picked up an Emmy Award for his work in 2011. And to make it a perfect homecoming for Mulaney, tonight’s repeat SNL even includes a couple of sketches that Mulaney wrote for the show during his time with the series.

One of the sketches featured Mulaney as a TV producer who sat down to talk about one of sitcom creations with an interviewer played by cast member Cecily Strong. The show was called “Switcheroo” which featured a father and son who had a “Freaky Friday” style mind swap. The series attempted to answer the very pervy question of who ends up having sex with the mother? Her husband whose mind in now in her son’s body or her son who is now in possession of his father’s body? The sketch is as hilarious as the premise is twisted.

The other sketch from the Mulaney SNL files was a musical extravaganza called “Diner Lobster.” This sketch was so big in scale, the most impressive part of it was that SNL EP Lorne Michaels and his amazing crew were able to pull it off on live television. Cast member Pete Davidson plays a customer who dares to go into forbidden diner territory by ordering the lobster which is somehow listed on every diner menu. From there, the sketch goes into a huge musical number straight out of “Les Misérables” including cast member Kenan Thompson as the lobster in a giant water tank with John Mulaney playing the part of singing waiter while watching his written creation come to life.

The sketches in tonight’s very quirky SNL repeat include John Mulaney as a doctor consulting with a patient (cast member Luke Null) who wants to have his implanted horns removed from his head, a student who can’t participate in his high school’s national walk-out because he’s become overly excited and as a drag queen waitress with ulterior motives named “Tawny Pockets.” Tonight’s show also has a couple of SNL – Digital Shorts with one documenting a peaceful commune in the 60’s which clashes with the town’s people and features Kenan Thompson as a man who joins the collective just to score with the women. The other short is trailer for a new Bravo reality show which consists of only the intros to the network’s series.

The cold open in this evening’s Saturday Night Live repeat takes us back to the Trump White House, although without Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump impression. SNL more than made up for Baldwin’s absence in the cold open by bringing in a couple of ringers to play new members of Saturday Night Live‘s World of Trump. Ben Stiller arrives to play the legally challenged Trump lawyer Michael Cohen while screen legend Robert De Niro debuts as Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Cast members Kate McKinnon and Beck Bennett appear in the cold open as Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Vice-President Mike Pence respectively, but it’s Stiller and De Niro who steal the open with a lie detector interrogation scene right out of their comedy, “Meet the Parents.”

Weekend Update‘s news team of Michael Che and Colin Jost continued to be the hottest part of Saturday Night Live by delivering another stellar performance. Che and Jost had a bounty of Trump topics to tee off on including the then-recent FBI raid on Trump lawyer Michael Cohen’s office, the release of fired FBI Director James Comey’s new book, plus porn star Stormy Daniels making trouble for the President. Other topics included yet another teacher / student sex scandal, a U.S. airstrike on Syria, Bill Cosby’s trial being interrupted by a protester, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s very uncomfortable testimony in front of Congress and a story about doggy yoga. Kenan Thompson makes another hilarious appearance at the Weekend Update desk as the self-glorifying basketball dad LaVar Ball. And Kate McKinnon debuts a new hit WU character, conservative radio and television host Laura Ingraham.

The first promo for tonight’s repeat episode of Saturday Night Live features host John Mulaney high atop 30 Rock in New York City. Watch below as Mulaney touts his talents while dealing with severe SNL budget crunches. The next set of promos features Mulaney with musical guest Jack White and cast member Aidy Bryant. The trio walks through the perfect promo formula while also deciding who sits at the SNL cool table.

Tonight’s Saturday Night Live at 11:30pm on NBC is one of three last repeats of the summer and is hosted by John Mulaney with musical guest Jack White.
