Kevin Hart Wants to Teach You History

Kevin Hart and the History Channel are planting seeds of hope for later in 2017 with the comedian narrating a special called “Kevin Hart Presents: The Black Man’s Guide to History”. Framed by Hart’s young daughter’s distress that all of African-American history boils down to slavery and endless oppression, the special focuses on lesser known tales that haven’t been mined yet for their tearjerky-ness

In recent years, we’ve been graced with a few comedy shows that are not only hilarious, but also educational. Derek Waters’ Drunk History has told us, through the lens of drunken comedians, countless stories from throughout American history that many of us never knew. Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome’s Another Period brilliantly satirizes the aristocracy of the past and today to show that people, regardless of the time period they live in, are all the same.

Now, comedy fans will have another outlet with which to both learn and laugh with Hart.

As Hart provides the narration, scripted re-enactments will take place that depict figures. History Channel’s lens won’t stop at the most common stories of George Washington Carver or the heroism of Rosa Parks; the stories mentioned so far sound obscure and awesome. There’s the incredibly courageous slave who mailed himself to a free state in a box, forever earning him the nickname of “Box”, Mae Jemison, the first female black astronaut and the actual first person to go to the North Pole, Matthew Henson. Whether the two-hour event will take the form of “Drunk History”-esque reenactments or something more formal, the show sounds like a nerdy boost of morale right into America’s Obama-less arm. “A Black Man’s Guide to History” is executive produced by Kevin Hart and Dave Becky through Hartbeat Productions and Comedy Dynamics. The special doesn’t have an official air date just yet.

The show’s concept was created by Comedy Dynamics’ Brian Volk-Weiss, and is being produced as a collaborative effort between Comedy Dynamics and Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat Productions.

Kevin Hart Presents: The Black Man’s Guide to History is set to premiere some time in 2017.
