After claiming an Emmy and ubiquitous viewership as one of Netflix’s pet projects, a tangible copy of Patton Oswalt’s 2015 stand-up special “Talking for Clapping” is on its way. Produced by indie record company aspecialthing and distributed through their website as well as on Amazon and at Massachusetts-based nerd emporium Newbury Comics, the album will be exclusively released on vinyl. The album comes in three pretty colors with the option of a signed poster; black, white and a sold-out blue-splattered white charity edition whose proceeds benefit 826LA. Some sellers provide the option of including a signed poster.

While Oswalt’s brand of nerd-indulgent alt comedy probably lines up well with the demographic that loves stand-up comedy immortalized on colorful vinyl, the really exciting implications lay in Netflix’s hands. Previously praised for their patronage system of throwing money at niche creative projects (the kind typically passed over by less daring financiers) without too much interference, it’s incredible that the mega-streamer would share production rights with a small record company instead of creating an in-house company to retain the profits.

This newfound partnership with a grassroots record label reflects well on the streamer’s support of quality content. Netflix’s unique edge that catapulted the streamer leagues ahead of other movie rental companies was always their digital existence; that they’d hand over the reins to provide physical copies of a project speaks volumes. The record also contains two previously unreleased tracks; whatever contracts Netflix shares with Oswalt must be fairly lenient to allow this extra goodie for fans.

Aspecialthing is a Los Angeles based D.I.Y. record label that’s also home to Paul F. Tompkins, Jen Kirkman, Greg Proops, Doug Benson and Kyle Kinane’s comedy. “Talking for Clapping” will be released on September 23rd through digital and brick-and-mortar sellers.
