Amazon Grabs HBO Comedy Exec

nick hall

Following a change of regime at HBO, Nick Hall, the former senior vice president of comedy, will be heading out for a new job at Amazon as head of development for half hour comedy television series. This is the latest development in the wake of president Michael Lombardo leaving and Casey Bloys replacing him as programming president.

Hall has a sterling reputation, having helped develop Judd Apatow’s highly anticipated comedy “Crashing” with Pete Holmes, the return of “The Comeback” and the recently announced return of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” as well as “How to Make it In America” among others.

While online streamers have rapidly expanded in the last few years, this is evidence that the platforms are ready to take on older cable networks. New clashes over executives signal some changes in power, since presumably all companies could pick from a saturated group of qualified candidates. However, as streamers draw audiences away from conventional television channels and channels evolve to offer streaming sites as part of their services, a clash seems inevitable.

Despite HBO’s reputation for edgy, innovative content, the streamers represent a wide-open field of possibilities and flexibility. That could very well draw away some of network television’s most talented players.
