Lena Dunham’s Strange and Weird Childhood Family Portrait

lena dunham tonight show

Lena Dunham revealed how much her parents put up with her during her upbringing, an insight into the origins of the obliviousness and indulgence “Girls” gets criticized for, on Jimmy Fallon’s “The Tonight Show”. Fallon showed off a childhood portrait of a seven year old Dunham glowering Donald Trump style and posing as a cross-armed kid mogul with an African fertility brooch. The comedienne shared that the blazer she’s wearing cost her parents $49.99, a ridiculous amount to spend on a child’s outfit in 1994, but that she wore the piece to school everyday with a rotating array of brooches and absolutely no friends.

Dunham also reported her mother remembered her calling her bedroom her office and Dunham would declare,“heading into the office” whenever she’d go to her room. Dunham’s start in entertainment is explored; after a vacation to Italy, her parents built her an in-home “teatro” for her puppet shows. The very premise is privileged and ridiculous, but doesn’t negate how much fun those shows probably were and what a great story it makes for. Some things stay the same, even if the teatro has moved from a family’s home to HBO.
