Maria Bamford’s Lady Dynamite Trailer Looks Fantastic

Maria Bamford has released the trailer for her upcoming Netflix series “Lady Dynamite” as well as summer tour dates.
“Lady Dynamite” will follow Maria as her career gears up at an overwhelming pace for the comedian, pushing her to break.
The comedy is semi autobiographical, and is based on a time around 2009 when Bamford suffered a nervous breakdown and returned home to Minnesota before regaining herself. Produced by Mitch Hurwitz (“Arrested Development”) and Pam Brady (“South Park”), the first season spans twelve episodes and stars guests an amazing cast, we spotted Sarah Silverman, Juna Diane Raphael, Bridgett Everett, Jon Daly, Fred Melamed and Jason Mantzoukas in the trailer alone. We can only hope Bamford’s pugs make an appearance, whether played by her actual pets or hunky professional dog actors.
Episodes will most likely nakedly explore mental health issues, a familiar topic in Bamford’s stand-up. Not only does “Lady Dynamite” lift from her stand-up career thematically, but also stylistically. The actress playing Maria’s mother is clearly doing a spot-on impression of Bamford’s own spot-on impression of her mother. Many of the characters comprising Maria’s world are self-absorbed with good intentions or at least unwitting honesty. Similar to so many of Bamford’s stand-up characters, the cast comprises a rainbow of human flaws, tempered by Maria’s gentleness and understanding that we’ve all been there, and some of us are still there. Bamford’s tour crisscrosses America and parts of Canada, beginning today and ending in mid-October.
“Lady Dynamite” will be available streaming on May 20th. That can’t come soon enough.
