The Funniest Sports Moments In Sports Comedy History

The Funniest Sports Moments In Sports Comedy History
There’s so much comedy in day to day sports (see “The Other Side of Sports”), but there’s also plenty of sports in comedy. Intern Anthony from “Bennington” put together his list of the funniest sports moments in sports comedy history.
The Hanson Brothers Debut (Slap Shot)
There are two types of people on this planet who still play with model trucks at age 20; serial killers and the Hanson Brothers. Arguably the greatest trio in sports history, the Hanson Brothers delivered funny moments from the minute they graced the screen. Labeled as the enforcers for the Reggie Dunlap led Charlestown Chiefs, the brothers grab your attention with their insane locker room interruptions and kicking the ever loving shit out of opponents on the ice. Oh and they wear Buddy holly glasses which van only add to the insanity.
Billy Hoyle’s “Zone” (White Men Can’t Jump)
When you play basketball on the playground you better know how to trash talk and Billy Hoyle proved to be one of the greatest in cinema history. With his slick wit combined with street sense, he delivers some incredible lines which not only infuriates his opponents and his teammate Wesley Snipes, but gets him in the zone all at the same time. He ended up winning the 2 on 2 for Brotherhood tournament but lost the money he won on bet and went home empty handed. Good thing his girlfriend knows five foods that start with the letter Q.
Too High?…. (Major League)
While it was a rough debut for Wild Thing Ricky Vaughn, it’s still considered one of the funniest debuts in cinema history. This scene has everything you could possibly ask for; classic Bob Ueker commentary, Clu Haywood asking how Taylors wife and his kids are, and of course the banter between four diehard fans wondering if the ball was hit too high. Vaughn getting ejected was hilarious too since he told the ump to blow him, something I think we are all guilty of in men’s league high arch softball games. My stomach hurt very badly after watching this scene and whether you argued that the ball was too high or not…..who gives a shit it’s gone.
Coop Pulls a Babe Ruth….Sorta (BASEketball)
Even though it was Remer who promised a drunk eleven year old on the verge of a liver transplant that Coop would hit 3 home runs, Coop still had to deliver. Hammered drunk, Coop was on the verge of three when he launched one that didn’t even come close to a home run. Despite the fact that he didn’t pull it off this scene is pure gold, not only because of how sloshed Coop is, but because of the Al Michaels and Bob Costas call on the home run. Lets not forget the classic banter between Remer and Squeak about Squeaks post op transvestite girlfriend…..simply classic.
Ty Webb meets Carl Spackler (Caddyshack)
Its funny to think that two of the greatest comedic actors of all time shared the screen for about five minutes in their historic acting careers. But those five minutes they gave us what could be one of the funniest scenes I’ve ever seen in my life. Whether it’s Bill Murray pulling out a Bob Marley type joint, or Chevy Chase chipping off of Bill Murrays coffee table, the dialogue between these two is nothing short of spectacular. And even though these two fought each other in the hallways of SNL, they came together for five minutes and created magic.
Happy Gilmore vs. Bob Barker (Happy Gilmore)
Here’s a math problem: When you pair bad boy golfer Happy Gilmore with game show host Bob Barker what do you get? the answer? A stomachache. That’s what I felt when I saw Bob Barker repeatedly punch Happy Gilmore over and over again. While the fight was hysterical, the guy making the comments to Happy Gilmore while he’s golfing adds to the chaos of this scene. And i suggest people get their pets spayed or neutered otherwise prepare to get your ass handed to you.
Big Ern is Finally Above The Law (Kingpin)
The ridiculous hair piece, the celebration at the end of the shot, Bill Murray bowling against Woody Harrelson; this has all the ingredients of a funny scene. It’s when Ernie McCracken completes the turkey that causes me to almost lose my lunch. He also delivers one of the greatest post game rants of all time declaring that big Ern is finally above the law.
Jimmy Dugan Signs a Ball (A League of Their Own)
Tom Hanks no doubt steals the show in this one. His classic lines as Jimmy Dugan left me laughing all movie long. But it’s the scene where he signs a little kids ball that made me laugh hard especially what he wrote to him. I hope he took that solid advice from a very seasoned man……. the clap is no laughing matter.
