Dear Awards Show producers looking for ideas on how to lighten up and bring fun and energy and pacing and even a little bit of danger to your show. Here’s how you do it.
As far as awards shows go, the Critics Choice Awards hit a home run last night. As the new show on the block the CCAS went all in on fun, with T.J. Miller at the helm, and for some reason, William Shatner announcing, like an awards show Ed McMahon. Before going over the hosting clips, we want to congratulate Amy Schumer for taking home two awards- an MVP award for her achievements this year, and the award for Best Actress in a Comedy. Congratulations also to Aziz Ansari taking home a Best Comedy Series award for the Netflix series Master of None. The Big Short won for Best Comedy Movie as well as taking the Best Actor in a Movie award for Christian Bale. Jeffrey Tambor and Rachel Bloom won for Best Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series for Transparent and My Crazy Ex Girlfriend, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series went to Andre Braugher for Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Mayim Bialik for Big Bang Theory.
In other comedy categories, Netflix’s hit animated series Bojack Horseman won the award for Best Animated Series, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver snagged the award for Best Talk Show.
Comedy was a huge winner at the Critics Choice Awards, not only because of the awards handed out in the comedy categories, but also because of a killer speech delivered by Judd Apatow before he presented Amy Schumer with her MVP award, and for an outstanding job by host T.J. Miller. As we predicted, Miller was crazy, Miller got physical, and Miller delivered unexpected, uncensored and very un-boring segments from his cold open, to his energetic, short of breath and sweaty monologue, to his evening gown cannon (think t-shirt cannon), and so much more, T.J. Miller showed how to host an awards show with irreverance, youth, energy and comedy. Nobody got their feelings hurt, but the comedy was far from tame and there was plenty of snark- the good kind. Watch some of the clips of Millers performance below, and check out Judd Apatow’s badass speech here.
T.J. Miller and his comedy friend Nick Vatterott created a cold open for the Critics Choice Awards and Miller ends up in a crisis, fast– he can’t stop getting dressed!!!!!
T.J. Miller opens the show with a monologue and the help of four friends. You’ll get the chance to enjoy Miller getting physical, coaching the crowd, and delivering some damn good one liners including a new take on the Netflix and Chill. Congratulations to the writers, on a great job here.
Miller reads the worst review he’s ever received for his stand up, set to tender piano music, which questions whether T.J. Miller is a smart comedian acting dumb, or just a large man burping into a microphone. You know the answer even before you hit play.
Congratulations to T.J. Miller for beating out T.J. Miller, T.J. Miller, T.J. Miller and T.J. Miller for the award for Best Deputy Ranger in a Talking Bear Comedy.
Miller is the first Awards Show Host to shoot out free ball gowns out of his ball gown cannon/gun.
