Story Update 1/20/16: All three women have since deleted their tweets and  Amy has responded and tweeted that she would never ever steal jokes, and also spoke out explaining where her jokes came from. Amy Liebman also clarified her original statement, with a tweet that said she never said Amy stole her joke, she just said it was the same, and that she wrote it first.  Read the full update and hear the audio here.

Three comedians are accusing of stealing their jokes.

Monday night a single tweet from comedian ignited a bit of a firestorm over allegations that Amy Schumer has been stealing jokes, not only from Liebman but also from and .  The original tweet from Liebman, which has since been deleted, said “Between Amy Schumer doing 1 of my best jokes on her HBO special and this meme of my joke, I’m done with social media.”  The meme (which was unrelated to Schumer) depicted an image of a pinup style woman quoting one of Liebman’s jokes. Writer, director and comedian Chuck Martin replied to Liebman’s tweet suggesting she talk to Kathleen Madigan, implying that perhaps Madigan had a similar beef.  Now looped in to the conversation on twitter, Madigan replied, “wow. finally. get ready for a shit storm” and then a second tweet saying she has a split screen showing a “disgusting amount of stealing” that she will release adding “game over. I’m done.”

Tammy Pescatelli joined the conversation posting links to the allegedly stolen material and the original material that Schumer supposedly relied on. “What has always been amazing to me is that she purports to be a feminist and yet only steals from other female comedians. If we call her on it we are “jealous” or career shamed. Be successful. WE want you to do well, just do it with your own material. BTW she blocked me.”  Pescatelli posted a joke she made on her 2006 Comedy Central Half Hour and a sketch that she alleges rips off her joke and alleges that there are many more instances. “So many more but nobody listens…at least Cosby knocked his victims out b4 he raped them,” she tweeted. Pescatelli claims she has no beef, just what she calls oppression and degradation. Her last tweet says “I too have a dream #MLKDay.” The women allege Schumer used stolen material in her stand up act, her movie Trainwreck, and her critically acclaimed sketch show, Inside Amy Schumer.

Liebman’s original tweet was deleted and replaced with a tweet saying “It’s all good” late last night.  Shitstorm over? We’ll see.

A reddit poster created a video compiling the instances being accused. You can watch it here.

The tweets and clips are all listed below.

There's no joke theft, but since you all enjoy talking about it being real, it makes me wonder why you aren't beating the living crap out of Mencia like Rogan likes to do.

@Chainsman that's just it, these ladies don't have a MMA trained fighter that would threaten some hack comic for them. Instead all they have are fanboys/girls who trash older less popular comedians because they're in love with the new less funny and unoriginal comic. But if Rogan wants to punch Amy that's up to him.

Ive seen this happen many times - where a comedian says the same joke as someone else...and it is impossible that they happened to be exactly the same. obviously jokes get stolen like any other ideas, and it is a dirty trick. and i dont even watch that much comedy and it is still noticeable.

also it seems to be that anytime a woman has a problem with another woman, as justified as the complaint is, she is deemed "jealous." i can say "I cant stand kim kardashian!!" and list reasons including how she has negatively affected society by normalizing narcissism and failed to use her limitless money and power to improve anything other than her ass... men scoff at it ..." youre jealous!" but, I can say I hate hitler because he ruined the charlie chaplin moustache and theyre like "you have a point." sexist and unfair.

I feel like I've read this before... Did you steal it?!

@lond3lond2 I don't think you're using the word "impossible" correctly and are being intellectually dishonest.  Of course it's possible for two people to independently come up with the same joke.  I search for jokes I come up with on Twitter all of the time to see if someone has thought of it and more often than not, yes.

They just hate her because she is a beautiful funny woman.

@Moe Green That's not it. None of these women initiated the accusations, probably because of ignorant accusations like this...and none of them 'hate her, because you find her beautiful or any other reason. They're all hard working comedians who deserve credit for their work. There was also the case of the late Patrice O'neal.  Yes she claims that she wrote the same jokes that all 4 of these people had written and perfected years earlier, but thats highly improbable.  Writing comedy isn't as easy as it looks.

There's only one way to settle this. An old fashioned panties and pillows fight, winner takes all the jokes!

If she didn't steal material she sure as hell stole Wendy Liebman's delivery. Every joke ends with a misdirect. It's stealing another comic's essence. She's just younger and aggressively business conscious, a girl Dane Cook.

For the record, I'm a huge Amy Schumer fan. She's always been generous telling the press that I'm one of her influences. And she's been so nice to me in person. So I wanted to believe that someone sold her my joke.

She told me she wrote it though, and I believe her. I've written jokes that I found out later were similar to jokes written by Phyllis Diller, Margaret Smith, and Steve Martin. And I'm sure there are more. I get it--there are only so many ideas.

But yesterday a friend claimed my joke as hers until I reminded her otherwise. And today I found a meme on the internet that was a variety of one of my favorites.

So that's why I wrote about Amy. I never said she stole it. I believe that she also wrote it but I wanted to at least claim what was also mine twenty five years ago.

@wendy liebman Make up your damn mind wendy, enough with the double speak.

Amy is a joke thief, this is not the first time this has happened.

It is obvious you were threatened by Amy's connections, hence the deleted tweets, double speak, and 'almost' apology.

Grow a damn spine, the pig stole from you ladies.

If someone has been so nice to you,why not pick up the phone and call her instead of launching some passive aggressive Twitter bomb?

Not buying it. If I've learned anything its that you can always trust a black man with a moustache and you can never trust a jew. I am withholding judgement until Ted Lange weighs in.

Are all of Madoff's victims "jealous cunts." Maybe so. Maybe they just need a "premise", or many people's "premises" to  become really successful i.e. famous.

guest114

Funnier comedians aren't in her purview. Would you call the owner of a car that had been stole jealous of the person who was currently driving it?

SLEEPYDOG

If Amy was going to steal jokes wouldn't she steal them from funnier comedians!?

Triggerslappy

@SLEEPYDOG first off, what does that say about Amy that she would steal jokes from unfunny comedians "youur opinion". Secondly, what joke thief steals from the most popular of comedians? I'm hitting the road with some hot pocket jokes I said I wrote I hope no one figures it out.

SLEEPYDOG
SLEEPYDOG

@Triggerslappy @SLEEPYDOG  Okay "First off" How would you know if Amy was stealing jokes since you were unable to tell that I was making a joke about Amy stealing jokes.  WOW!?

SLEEPYDOG
SLEEPYDOG

So she's a joke thief because of the broadest mention of a premise? Typical jealous cunts people hate to see other people be successful it's just human nature. Pescatelli is funny but her biggest draw is she's cute as hell and Kathleen Manigan is funny sure but she'll never get to Amy's level of fame. Ladies jealousy is very unappealing

Sorry, but these women are grasping.  The one about women dressing their men for other women?  Do these comedians really think they're coming up with themes that no one has ever come up with before?  I'm not a real Amy fan but this is just pathetic.

Triggerslappy

So she's unoriginal, unattractive, and unfunny...what's the problem?

Having done standup, and having had my jokes stolen by other comedians certainly stings (especially when they are more-successful comics).

I've often tried to tell myself, "Maybe they just happened to think of the same joke? It can happen!" But there are also times I know they took my joke and ran with it. That's where twitter comes in handy. (And, of course, there are times when they re-write it ever so slightly and try to say, "See, mine is a totally different joke!")

All not blondes. Coincidence?

guest114

@Moe Green Both Kathleen Madigan and Amy Schumer were once redheads, and Sarah Silverman wasn't a blond. (Schumer modeled herself after her)

@BallPeenHammer: I'm not Wendy Liebman if that's what you're inferring. I'm a long time fan who's met her twice. That's not the point. I believe that women are equally as talented and funny as men. Just not the ones that have been propped up by social media,  When that happens it becomes disingenuous because it's obvious that they don't have the chops that their male counterparts do. We're fighting the wrong fight. Let's get rid of the publicists. Madeline Kahn, Lilly Tomlin, Jeanine Garofalo, Broad City, Amy Sederas.......and yes Wendy Liebman.

@RuthFlett, Liebman's joke is [ "I'm old fashion,  on the first date I like it when the guy pays for sex"]  Schumer did that on verbatim. Madigan's bit about dieting has the punchline that [Oprah can afford to hire people to knock the food out of her hand.] Schumer's sketch is about paying someone to knock the food out of your hand. Pescatelli's states in her bit that women dress their significant others poorly so that other people don't want to f##k them.  In Schumer's trailer her charactar infers that her sister dressed her husband poorly so that other people wouldn't want to f##k him.  What is it that you don't get.  It's one thing to pay writers to write for you, it's totally unacceptable to steal other's work.  ChrisDavidson has a good point, Schumer has certainly copied Wendy Liebman's delivery, as well as Silverman's, (I'm the cute girl with a potty mouth thing)

@guest  Hi Wendy, what have you been up to lately?

@guest yet in the same skit that Madigan talks about Oprah getting food slapped she steals a joke from The Onion cira 1998. So she is also a thief. http://www.theonion.com/r/3781 she may have to go back to her glass house.

Wendy Liebman is the most aggrieved by Amy Schumer's.  She's a very sweet and non-confrontational. Unfortunately that makes her easier to take advantage of. She's clearly the superior comic.  I'm sure that Schumer's team of publicists will have this whole thread removed soon.

ChrisDavison

The fact that Wendy Liebman is just now saying something is the strange part to me. I had assumed that they had some form of a conversation. Liebman's delivery and style has been her own for decades and Schumer has been using it since the first time I saw her.

Soooo ... where is the thievery exactly? I'm not getting it. Those clips posted in this article - I watched them - is that it? If that's it then this is really petty. Those premises are so basic ... is there anything else to show some actual joke thievery? This is a pretty serious accusation.

@RuthFlett It's rather clear. Some of the jokes are almost word for word. Premise is one thing, but word for word recital is much different.
