Amy Schumer Addresses Trolls Trying to Sabotage Her Newest Special’s Ratings

If you’re a comic and you want to build yourself a nice little mob of hate-spewing trolls, talk about your politics in your act. If you really want to turn up the hate, be a woman. As has learned, being a politically-outspoken female comic isn’t easy. Her politics and honesty about her sexuality and personal life have garnered her a dedicated following of adoring fans, but have also attracted the ire of internet trolls who attack her on social media and even try to tank the ratings of her various projects.

SplitSider posted a story on Tuesday, documenting the various efforts by trolls to derail the ratings for Schumer’s book, attack fellow comics who support Schumer’s comedy, and tank the ratings of her new Netflix special, The Leather Special. The latter, which currently has over 1,500 reviews on Netflix, has accrued a massive amount of one-star ratings. While some of them are surely legitimate, many of them appear to have been left by people who didn’t view more than a few minutes of the special, or saw none of it at all, but who simply disagree with her politics or dislike her personality.

“You’re a comedian, not an expert on politics. Stop feeding us this crap. The only funny joke you have is your career,” reads one review.

“I tried to watch it but found it to be unwatchable after about 3 minutes. To be fair, seeing Amy Schumer and hearing her voice gives me diarrhea inducing stomach cramps on her best day,” says another.

“I couldn’t make it through more than a few minutes without kicking off a gag reflex. More of a rambling attempt at being funny than anything else. had it right in reasoning that comedians who aren’t very funny have to fall back on using crude language,” says another reviewer.

As with all things, the truth usually lies in the middle of two extremes. The special has a 75 rating on Metacritic; most ratings from critics have been positive to mediocre, while the vast majority of the user ratings on the site are not just negative, but straight up hateful. The idea that there is a concerted effort by Schumer detractors to negatively rate anything she touches seems to hold weight, especially in the case of The Leather Special, which features material that’s par for the course for Schumer, but which is now eliciting way more of a reaction than it ever has prior, at a time when Schumer’s star is bigger than it’s ever been.

Schumer addressed the smear campaign in a post on Instagram, which you can see below. She thanked SplitSider for doing it’s due diligence in researching the reviews prior to accepting that they were all legitimate, informed ratings, and went on to say that she welcomes the hate that she receives, as it “makes [her] feel so powerful and dangerous and brave.” She goes on to say that “It reminds me what I’m saying is effective and brings more interest to my work and their obsession with me keeps me going.”

tl’dr Amy Schumer has a lot of haters, whom she encourages to keep drinking that Haterade.

I am so proud of my special and grateful to all the people spreading love on line about it. I am the first female comic who is selling out arenas all over the world and so grateful for that. I am embarrassed for the "journalists" who report on trolls activities as if it's news. It's indicative of administration right now. Anyone who reported that "viewers aren't happy" with my special, it would have been cool if you did a moment of research before posting. The alt right organized trolls attack everything I do. Read the @splitsider article. They organize to get my ratings down. Meeting in sub Reddit rooms. They tried on my book and movies and tv show And I want to thank them. It makes me feel so powerful and dangerous and brave. It reminds me what I'm saying is effective and bring more interest to my work and their obsession with me keeps me going. I am only alarmed by the people printing their organized trolling as "news" this is what the current administration wants. So this post has nothing against the trolls. I thank you trolls so much. It fills me with hope and power to see you all furiously posting so as always accuse me of whatever lies you want. Call me a whale. Call me a thief and I will continue to rise and fight and lead. I know who I am. I am strong and beautiful and will use my voice my whole time on this earth. Journalists do better it's embarrassing. Trolls see you on the next one! 😘😘😘

I’m sure she has a point and there is truth to this but after watching it I would not slap more than one star on it. No politics no anti feminism just a lack of punchlines…

At least you watched it! The issue here is that there’s an army of people who didn’t watch one second of the special and yet are leaving reviews, which is antithetical to what a review is.

A film critic can’t watch the first ten minutes of a film and then write a review, because he hasn’t seen the whole product. Same applies here. Half of the negative reviews clearly read as people who didn’t watch the special, they just want to call her a fat libtard because they don’t like what she posts on Twitter and outspoken women make them angry.

You make a lot of generalizations in your defense of her, but did you watch the special? If so, did you feel it was a quality product?

Yeah I agree. We watched it right before watching Norton’s new special. I loved her old material.. this seemed a little sloppy, and awkward. Like trying to hard to relate to fans that she’s famous but still the same old gal, and trying to be funny with faces and voices. It had some funny points no doubt, I think we gave it a 3 out of 5 ( I would have given 2 if not for the girl enjoying it more than me) Recommend jimmys special for sure though

I read “She thanked SplitSider for doing it’s due diligence in” and the first thing I though was… keeping that leather outfit from splitting like an overcooked sausage on the grill.

    Maybe she just sucked?

You have no idea how much she’s sucked in her pudgy little life.

      March 16, 2017 at 12:31 pm

yeah this is getting annoying, she’s doing the same stuff she’s done since before she was famous. It was funny then, but now it’s old. It’s not people trying to troll her, it the fact that the real comedy fans who probably won’t admit it now but enjoyed her stuff before are sick of it and think it sucks now. I don’t like the fact that she “has to address it”… take the bad reviews and be more funny.

      • Billy Bats

        March 16, 2017 at 5:51 pm

Except there are a ton of trolls, though. There are people who watched the whole special, didn’t like it, and then left a negative review, and that’s totally valid. But if you read through the reviews, there are a ton from people who openly admit they didn’t watch it (or any more than a few minutes) but left a 1-star review nonetheless. You can’t review something you didn’t watch, and if you do, it’s because you’re a petty child who wants to shit on people that you disagree with.

Actually do the research before you chalk it up to her comedy being that bad and maybe, just maybe, try to put your own personal bias aside for a second and look at the facts.

      • mzoltek

        March 17, 2017 at 8:51 am

I have no personal bias, I’ve watched her specials before and was one time a fan… scroll down and see another comment I left as I made sure I saw trainwreck opening weekend. My wife mentioned wanting to give it a try so we’ll likely fire it up this weekend but I didn’t like her HBO special, and a lot of people didn’t. She’s becoming more popular with people who have not always been “comedy fans” and becoming less popular with “comedy fans”. It’s hard to call that statement a fact, but it’s how I observe it. Comedy Central has yet to renew her show, the ratings for her show and comedy central in general have declined. As much as you call my comments a personal bias which are not true, your bias to blindly defend her also should be mentioned. There are actual reviews outside of stupid netflix that say many of the same things the netflix reviews say. Just because she’s getting bad reviews on ANOTHER special, doesn’t mean she’s being trolled. That’s my point, and perhaps you should do your research… like reading another comment I posted as well as read reviews from other people.

This should say “Amy Schumer Addresses Rolls Trying to Sabotage Her Newest Special’s Ratings”. The Rolls under that sausage casing.

Oh, a fat joke, good one. Call her a libtard too, while you’re throwing around unoriginal, unfunny shit like that.

Also you realize that’s the joke, right? She knows she looks bad in the outfit, that was the point of wearing it, to wear a dumb leather outfit like Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy etc that she’d later regret.

Just remember, she’s a millionaire who gets to hang out with Chappelle, Rock, Attell, Quinn and the other greats while you sit at your keyboard crying salty tears.

        March 17, 2017 at 8:48 am

Libtard? I’m so far to the left Amy Schumer looks like Breitbart compared to me.

As for the “joke”: She a sloppy, chunky (not fat really) chick wearing something that accentuates it. Oh man. I apologize. That IS comedy GOLD!

I started watching it, will maybe finish this weekend. The drunk time travel joke is very close to Dave Attell’s Skanks for the Memories, which is the greatest comedy release of all time. Hard to believe no one around her pointed that out considering all the joke thief shit

So if you don’t like her comedy, you’re “alt-right”? I used to like her comedy, thought she was funny but to me her comedy just got old. I stopped watching her show, still went to see trainwreck opening night which I liked but I just don’t dig her stand-up. I have no intentions on watching the special, but am also not an “alt-right reddit person”.

    • Punk0

      March 19, 2017 at 2:09 pm

No one said you’re ‘alt-right’ if you don’t like her comedy. I hate that childish tactic. If you have no intention of watching the special, then why are you commenting on her bad reviews being legit? You can clearly read the reviews and see that many were made by people who didn’t watch it, since they actually come out and fucking say they didn’t. I’d guess that most, if not all the people who trashed it without watching lean right, or at least took issue with her gun control stance. Their politics isn’t as important as the fact that they are taking the time to go out of their way to disrupt a person’s life simply because they don’t agree with them. That’s pathetic and becoming quite common. I watched the special and didn’t care for it, although I laughed out loud a few times. The fact that I didn’t like it doesn’t make me afraid people are going to call me ‘alt-right’. If someone is actually worried about that, then they probably are.

Amy used to be funny and cool in the old days on O&A. Everyone on Wackbag loved her.
Then, she decided that she needed to disavow the people who liked her to be popular in Hollywood. “I was doing a Republican character.” Remember that? Where’s all that “Honesty” now?
That’s why people hate on her. They feel like they got thrown under the bus for her career advancement.

Even her rebuttal had political jabs in it. It’s fairly predictable that if you disparage 49% of the population, you will make some people angry with you. Now It’s a gender thing? Amy, you pulled down the fourth wall on the character you were playing when you became sanctimonious. That’s when you wrecked your act. We already have a Patton Oswald.
