Yeah, About That New “Who” Dude…
We reported yesterday about geeks excited over Peter Capaldi getting the job on Doctor Who. Turns out, he’s one of the geeks, and that’s a understatement. People have been digging up Capaldi’s teenage fan art and writings from the 70’s. The Radio Times found a letter from a 15-year-old Capaldi congratulating the show on it’s 10th anniversary, the Scottish Daily Record found his drawing of Fourth Doctor Tom Baker, and someone had a fanzine that featured his essay on the Third Doctor’s new opening titles with a drawing of Jon Pertwee that may or may not be his. Capaldi also received a packet of scripts and set plans after writing in to producers, which he still owns to this day. He was also a member of the official fan club (run through the BBC); the head of the club and a BBC secretary both remember him as a pain in the ass who constantly pushed to become head of the club.
Also, Neil Gaiman revealed on Tuesday the role was first offered to a non-pasty white guy (a.k.a. black), but he turned it down. Which he’ll probably appreciate once he realizes the pain-in-the-ass letters he could’ve got from a 55-year-old Whovian.
