Who’s Still Standing: A Look Back at Season One of Last Comic Standing

Last Comic Standing is coming back to NBC on May 22nd. The show will be back with a new host, JB Smoove, and Roseanne, Keenan Ivory Wayans and Russell Peters will be judging. The original version of LCS debuted in 2003 on NBC with host Jay Mohr. Now over 10 years since that first season, we can look back and see how those original contestants fared in their comedy careers. Who’s still standing!?


Sean KentSean Kent, 1st eliminated

Sean Kent was the first comic eliminated on LCS. After the show wrapped, Sean who had beaten cancer once, had a recurrence of the disease. He beat it again and now as a two time survivor, Sean works with Will Ferrell’s Cancer for College program. Since Last Comic Standing, Sean went on to win both the San Francisco and Seattle International Comedy competitions. He performed on Showtime’s Green Collar Tour in 2009, then in 2010 he released his second CD. Last year, Sean was cast in the A&E reality series “Modern Dads” which followed the lives of 4 stay-at-home dads in Austin, Texas. His third album, Pig Roast is now available. terejoyceTere Joyce, 2nd eliminated

Tere Joyce bills herself as a Top 10 finalist from Season 1 of Last Comic Standing, but then there were only 10 contestants. After LCS, Tere found herself on the wrong end of a DEA raid of a California medical marijuana dispensary. She became a pro-marijuana activist and now does benefits to help support people who had been incriminated for pot offensives. She also started a one hour online radio show called “Hollywood Hemptress” on time4hemp.com and a web series called “Freedom of Joyce” where she discusses legalization issues.  Heres Tere performing stand up in 2013.

 


 

 

Rob CantrellRob Cantrell, 3rd eliminated

Rob Cantrell continues to tour doing stand up. Since Last Comic Standing: Season 1, his career has taken him to appearing in sketches on the Colbert Report and FX’s Totally Biased. He makes appearances at both the SXSW and Bonnaroo comedy festivals. His most recent work is a new comedy music album called “Dreams Never Die”. He’s currently working on filming music videos for each of the tracks on the album.  Watch Rob performing stand up.

 


 

 

davemordalDave Mordal, 4th eliminated

Dave Mordal is probably best known as guy who took baths with Rich Vos on LCS. Dave left Last Comic Standing after a head-to-head competition against Dat Phan, the season 1 winner. His work on LCS did lead to appearances on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno that same year. Dave returned to Last Comic Standing for Season 3’s “Battle of the Best” where he was the first runner up behind winner Alonzo Bodden. In 2009, Dave got a series on the Discovery Channel called “Wreckreation Nation with Dave Mordal” where he would travel the country looking for unusual sports and recreational activities.  Watch some of Wreckreaction Nation on YouTube.

 


 

 

geoffbrownGeoff Brown, 5th eliminated

Geoff Brown’s work on the first season of Last Comic Standing got him to appearances on the Arsenio Hall Show and a BET half hour Grandstand special. Geoff also went to work on Steve Harvey’s radio show and now currently works as a co-host now on the “Zo What? tess2Tess, 6th eliminated

Just a couple of years after Last Comic Standing: Season 1, Tess, the self proclaimed “Juicy Girl” got her own “Comedy Central Presents” special. That lead to another stand up special called “Tess: Looking For My Next Ex-Husband”. Tess continues to tour and she makes regular appearances on Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen.

 

 


 

cory kahaneyCory Kahaney, 7th eliminated

Cory Kahaney’s comedy highlights since Season 1 of Last Comic Standing include several appearances on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, the Late Show with David Letterman and The View. She also went on to be named best comedian in New York by Backstage Magazine. She’s had her own “Comedy Central Presents” special. Her off Broadway show, “The J.A.P. Show ran for 6 months in New York and now she tours with it nationally while also making appearances at comedy festivals like the Just For Laughs festival in Montreal.  Watch a little Cory here on YouTube.

 


 

 

RICHVOS

Rich Vos, 2nd Runner Up

Rich Vos has been everywhere since Last Comic Standing. He’s made appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Comics Unleashed, HBO, Showtime, The View, Fox News’ Red Eye and the Opie and Anthony Show. Rich has had 2 “Comedy Central Presents” specials since LCS. He can be seen regularly at the Comedy Cellar and Caroline’s in New York. He also now co-hosts the popular “My Wife Hates Me” podcast with his wife Bonnie McFarland. He recently produced and directed the documentary “Women Aren’t Funny” with Bonnie. RALPHIE MAY

Ralphie May, 1st Runner Up

Ralphie May, 1st runner up on Last Comic Standing: Season 1, has become a Comedy Central regular since LCS. He’s had 4 specials for the comedy network, including Girth of a Nation, Prime Cut, Austin-tatious and Too Big To Ignore. He’s appeared everywhere from the Tonight Show with Jay Leno to the Rosie Show to Attack of the Show. He was also the only white comic to appear on The Big Black Comedy Show. He recently appeared on Comedy Underground with Dave Attell on Comedy Central. Watch a recent clip on YouTube.

Dat Phan, Winner of Last Comic Standing: Season 1

As the winner of Last Comic Standing, Dat Phan received a half hour comedy special which he did the following year with “Comedy Central Presents”. He had appearances on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn. He released his own special Dat Phan Live in 2010. He had a brief appearance on The West Wing and was honored by the Smithsonian Institute in the museum’s Top 10 Most Influential Vietnamese – American Individuals.  Watch a clip from Dat Phan’s recent stand up.
