Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: May 7, 2022
Dedicated to the brilliant and beautiful Ernie Tripper
SNL is back live tonight after a bit of hiatus. Benedict Cumberbatch is hosting, and this will be his second time stepping into the role for SNL. He last hosted in 2016, five years ago, when his first Dr. Strange movie debuted.
Cumberbatch has the hot hand this week because he’s just released his second Doctor Strange flick, and there’s nothing bigger than a Marvel movie these days. But he’s more known (or used to be) for his more serious roles including two that scored Oscar nominations– The Imitation Game and Power of the Dog. Possibly his most well known role, is playing Sherlock Holmes for the BBC in Sherlock for seven years, but he’s has a vibrant performance career on stage, in cinema and on television and has earned a slew of awards for his performances.
In his first monologue, Benedict addressed a tense political situation calling the times, “the last week of America as we know it.” He may have been right. He also sang a song about his accomplishments, like getting his CBE from the Queen of England, having “Cumberbitches” as fans (okay but cumbersnatches would be so much better), and his penchant for playing geniuses like Strange, Alan Turing, Sherlock Holmes and Kahn from Star Trek.
Tonight’s musical guests is Arcade Fire.
In week’s promo, Benedict fights for attention with members of musical guest Arcade 5 and members of the SNL cast.
So what do we predict will be a part of the SNL roster tonight? Undoubtedly a Roe v Wade cold open, without question reference to the Dave Chappelle slap, and who knows maybe even a Dave Chappelle cameo. A sketch based on the Met Gala seems like a strong possibility, and if the stars align, maybe Pete Davidson will appear in it, although the odds favor another no show from Pete at least as far as a live appearance. The White House Correspondents dinner should get a mention in Weekend Update. And there’s no question Elon Musk will figure into tonight’s show in one way or another.
You can find out for yourselves tonight at 11:30pm ET on NBC and streaming on Peacock.
